Caring - [kair-in] - to have an inclination, liking, fondness, or affection

Here is another one of my 1KW Gallery "a thousand words" where I approach couples or families and ask to take their photos. For those who are new to my blog, the goal: capture an image of the couple, ask them to review the image and then name that image based on the first thing that comes to mind.

For my next couple, they named it "Caring". You can really see the love and affection as they look at each other when I asked them to express how they felt on the day of their wedding. What words comes to mind for you?

Happiness - [hap-ee-ness] - good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy

Here is another one of my 1KW Gallery "a thousand words" where I approach couples or families and ask to take their photos. For those who are new to my blog, the goal: capture an image of the couple, ask them to review the image and name that image based on the first thing that comes to mind.

For my next couple, they named it "happiness" for obvious reasons. I can't help but smile every time I look at this picture. Their laughter was infectious and the funny thing is, all I asked them to do is smile!!! What words comes to mind for you?

I've recently got introduced to Damian a few weeks back which lead to this awesome headshot/portrait session. I say "headshot/portrait" as he needed a few headshots for his portfolio but once we started shooting the session lead to headshots to a few wardrobe changes to hallyway shot until we were out the door and taking photos outside.

We had an awesome time as when we were not shooting we were wiping away laugh tears while he shared a few "behind the scenes" acting stories from his past play performances. Now he is going for the "big time" and we can't wait to see this young star acting in a few movies in the near future.

Best of luck Damian and thanks for the jokes.

Today is my b-day and as I look forward to 2010 I realize that things are just starting to pick up. So I thought it wise to post a quick update of my schedule so far. The wifey and I are still confirming the magic number of weddings this year but we know it will be limited due to upcoming projects.

Calm [kɑːm] - absence of disturbance; Serenity; tranquillity; peaceful

I first met Daphne at my son's soccer practice. Though our conversation was breif we hit it off right away. A few weeks later we were able to connect for a photo shoot. She had a great idea to surprise her boyfriend with a portrait collage of her for Christmas. Naturally we had to take that challenge but not without offering her a challenge of our own. We suggested "Would you be up for taking a few images on the train tracks?" She shook her head from side to side and laughed nervously for a few seconds then "oh...are you serious???"

Spirited [ˈspɪrɪtɪd] - displaying animation, vigour, courage or liveliness

When I was asked to take Brenton and Denise's engagement session and soon to be winter wedding I did not hesitate. Actually I didn't even gave them a chance to finish the question before I blurted out YES!

The engagement shoot was an all day event from St. James Catholic church to the Distillery District in Toronto. It was hard believe we packed in so many activities in one day, but we did. And we enjoyed every minute of it. In particular, the sweet couple who gave Denise and Brenton a complimented that they were as beautiful as a carved statues. Great praise and well deserved.

Many thanks to the stores like Hastens, Lileo, Sport, Vintage Gardner, and Soma chocolate maker that let us take images in and around their unique locations and sample their products. Drinking Soma's extraordinary rich hot chocolate and relaxing in front of a gorgeous fireplace at Hastens made us feel like royalty. I know, I know. It's a hard life taking images of gorgeous and happy couples but someone has to do it...please follow their journey in a day in a life of Brenton and Denise.

First Impressions

Thank you to 1st impressions.

If it wasn't for 1st impressions, I would not have left a lasting impression on my high school sweetheart who later became my wife.

When we first met, you were reading a magazine. And the only thing I could think of to strike up a conversation was to ask to read your magazine. Of course, I did not know at the time that you were reading the Glamour magazine. But whether it was considered a good or bad impression, it made a memorable moment for our first encounter and I'm glad for it.

Here is to more memorable moments as impactful as the first time we met...Happy Anniversary.

I recently conducted a survey to help prepare for the next season of photography sessions. I found the answers to be both surprising and intriguing. I'm always building my database so feel free to add your thoughts as well.

This doesn't surprise me at all actually! I was just having this conversation with a colleague who had recently spoken with a local photographer. That photographer told my friend/colleague that he just wanted to shoot...didn't want to TALK to people, or forge a relationship. It made me think about how much he is missing out on both personally and professionally when taking that stance. I am very personal with my clients - it isn't a business scheme, but a part of my personality! I love getting to know them, their quirks, their relationships, and capturing something special for them. I know price will always factor in to their decision, but I agree that people are more apt to spend with you if they like you and feel that you generally have an interest in them as well.

3 Zen Habits that a Bride can learn from a Photographer

Okay I'm not a true Zen photographer master yet but I'm pretty close. Here are 3 things I keep at the top of mind to help conduct a Zen photo session.

1 - "Get a good night sleep"

I know it may be hard to imagine a bride actually going to bed early before the wedding day but it can be done. One trick, is I have everything ready the day before by asking myself "If the wedding was to happen today would I be ready?" From the bride and groom perspective, all tasks for the wedding should be planned for completion as if the wedding was to be held the day before. Hence, the day before the wedding should be dedicated to rest and relaxation.

2 - "Eat and be merry"

Make sure to eat and hydrate yourself throughout the day. I always have a bottle of water and snacks packed and ready to satisfy my cravings throughout the photo session. Alright, honestly, my beautiful assistant (wifey) usually makes sure that my belly is full and that I'm hydrated. I suggest that the bride/groom assign someone with the important task to provide drinks and snacks to the entire Bridal Party. It doesn't have to be fancy but just enough food/water to avoid the wedding party from becoming famished or de-hydrated. Trust me, you and your bridal party will appreciate it.

3 - "Why prohibit what you can't prevent"

This is actually a quote from Napoleon that I try to follow this philosophy not only during my photo sessions but throughout my life. While I always feel the initial nervousness/excitement before a photo-shoot, during the session I try to stay calm and have a great time. I don't sweat the small things but rely on the careful planning and additional help from my assistant (wifey) to handle unforeseen events. For the bride and groom, I encourage you to have a stress free day as well. Assign not only your wedding activities but the wedding challenges to a trusted wedding coordinator. Advise them to make your life easier by having them make the decisions for things that may go wrong. And for those items that require your input don't stress the things that are out of your control. Rely on your careful planning and people you trust to make your day a special day.

If you are able to put these Zen habits into place you can almost guarantee a great time at the wedding and you will appreciate your day even more after reflecting back on your day through your wedding pictures.

The Reason I bought my Camera-Part II

In my old blog, I mentioned that one of the reasons why I bought my camera was to capture special moments of my family and friends. In particular, when my daughter Jasmine was born. Continuing with this theme, here is another reason why a proud father would have his camera to capture his family in a special moment. Graduation.

Now, I didn't bother display pictures of her receiving her awards (shamless plug: honour roll, science award and arts & drama award). Or pictures of her posing for me with her friends (I hope I didn't embarrass you too much). Or even of when she and I danced at the ceremony. Instead, the picture that invokes the words "my little girl" is the one image right after she took off herpainful high heels to replace them with her favourite purple Converse sneakers.

Congratulations on your graduation Jazz. I couldn't be prouder...you are the reason why photography was created! For those reading feel free to leave comments the reason why you bought your camera?

By the way, I had to also add a picture taken from my 6 year old son Ethan. He is an up and coming photographer. He even directs his models to either look away from the camera or fold their hands etc. More of his pictures to come under the blog header "Legacy and Scalability". Enjoy.

For my next couple, Chris+Angie, they named their images "Seductive" after I asked Angie to whisper to Chris what she first thought of him when she first laid eyes on him. What word comes to mind for you?

"Accounting for Taste"

I'm trying to catch up on some of my reading and recently read an article called"Accounting for Taste"in PsychologyToday Mag from the writer EricGardner. Psychology to Photography??? I know I know where is the transition, right? My major in University was Psychology but the transition makes sense...maybe I'll explain one day.

Anyway...Eric went on to write a brilliant article about our choices in art and music and what that says about our personality.

I've took the liberty to paraphrase the article but keep in mind there are opposite sides to each of these styles that have both positive and negative attributes. I chose to just elaborate on the positive but you can read the article for more details.

The Taste Hunters, enjoy discovering new artistic material and influencing the taste of others. Their openness correlates to a great range of taste. And are constantly sampling new music, scouring movies and visiting art museums.

The Thrill Seekers, are extroverts that are lively, active and social people that crave sensory excitement in their art. They maybe attracted to abstract or surreal art from such artists like Jackson Pollock. They also enjoy music with vocals as they are drawn to human voice.

The Self-Medicators, feeds off raw emotional songs and gravitate to emotionally turbulent art. They utilize inspirational message as self affirmation and self medication and often focus on content rather than structure. Art can regulate their moods from melancholic or uplifting through music, books, movies or pictures.

While I don't like to assing myself into any one style, it begs the question "what style best describes me"??? Based on my own perception of my self I think I would be a "Taste Hunter". But if you ask my wife I would probably be a "Self Medicator" All said and done I think I would like others to see me as a "Thrill Seeker" but I'm not sure why.

Based on the Camera Cruise Photog Mentors and their pics, what style fits them best? The Taste Hunter, the Thrill Seeker or the Self Medicator. Then let me know what style fits you and why. Who knows maybe the Photog Mentors will offer their own opinion of their style as well.

My top 5 Influential Photographers list for 2008

I just going throughMy top5 Influential Photographers list for 2008 and thought to share it with you all. Keep in mind this is no official ranking by any means but simply photographers that has influenced me throughout 2008. Feel free to comment or add your top 5 as well.

My Top 5 Photographer Influencers for 2008 (okay...I couldn't narrow it down to just 5 photographers so they are segmented into themes)

5.Dennis Hammond and Paris Whittingham These photographers I was able to meet at David Jay's Free to Succeed Workshop in NY. I like to think we are all at the beginning of our photography career so it is great to view their successes and accomplishments throughtout the year. And ofcourse, it motivates me to better my photography business to their level as well. Check out their latest blogs and don't forget to leave a comment or two.

4. Mike Larson, Fred Egan and Sara France. Not only do they offer great advice towards images, workflow and branding for your photography business. But they were instrumental in helping me organize a personal project called the Camera Cruise workshop. Mike, Fred and Sara your feedback and positive vibes will always be appreciated by my wife and myself...thanks much.

3. Sandy (Sam) Puc and Heather Rivlin. Their tireless efforts to photograph subjects in situations that are not always ideal is a true inspiration and a testament of the spirit. If you are not familiar with these photographers, Sam is the co-founder of the NILMDTS organization that I'm a part of and Heather is the Toronto region co-ordinator. Thank you both for your words of encouragement prior tomeÂ assisting in my first remembrance photography session. Your advice and encouragement was needed and did not go-unnoticed. You can always count on me for any futureÂ assignments,big or small.

2.[b]ecker. This year, I've learned more from this photographer than any other photographers combined. His [b]school videos and forum is invaluable to your business and I suggest checking out [b]school for any answers regarding your photography business. When you meet him in person you can't help but to get caught up in his energy which in turns positively influences your photography business. [b]ecker my only question is where do you get the energy?

Jasmine Star. Connecting with Jasmine, hearing her story and capturing her wisdom made a lasting impression on me. Even though my wife was not able to attend Jasmine's "church sermon" (those who have attended a workshop with her will know what I mean by "church service") she was still affected by my positive encounter with Jasmine. Jasmine your continued words of encouragement is appreciated by my wife and I more than you know.

David Jay. Attending David Jay's Free to Succeed workshop in NY hands down was the best money spent for my photography business this year. The confidence, sincerity and workflow gained during the workshop was invaluable and I've made sure to add these philosphies into my business platform. David, please continue to be a positive influence for us photographers...God Bless.
